  1st pom poem

  یک عمر خوانده بودیم

  During the 1980’s this poem was from a song on TV that used as a learning device to teach

  children to write Farsi, similar I suppose to the Tom and Jane series in the US. A line from this

  poem: “Sarah has a pomegranate” became the ^tle of one of my video works. Subsequently

  this poem was used as a protest song tracing the history of pre and post revolu^on Iran. In it a

  girl named Sarah is holding a pomegranate which leads to a bullet in the heart and blood on the

  streets.

  2nd pom poem

  صد دانه یاقوت

  The poem on this pomegranate describes the beauty of this historic fruit. Children were asked

  to memorize the poem, and use it to practice writing elegant cursive inscriptions rather than

  the crude leier blocks employed on this pomegranate.

  3rd pom poem

  به نام زن به نام زندگی

  The third poem is adapted from a protest song from the Woman-Life-Freedom movement of

  2022. In a sense this returns to the first poem and its transforma^on from a children’s learning

  tool to a site of social protest.
