The term "Shab-e Cheleh," synonymous with "Shab-e Yalda" in Iranian popular culture, originates from the tradition of naming the first forty days of winter as the "Big Cheleh" and the following twenty days as the "Small Cheleh."
Shab-e Yalda was incorporated into the ancient Iranian calendar in 502 BCE during the reign of Darius I.
Yalda marks the birth of Mithra, the Sun, and the return of the goddess Mithra to the world. The first day of Dey (December 22) symbolized the Sun's victory over the demonic darkness of the long nights, making it a sacred day for Iranian Mithraists.
Saadi expresses this sentiment beautifully in his verse:
"The breeze of the world's comfort does not soothe a wounded heart;
The true dawn will not appear until the Yalda Night has passed."
